Barbara Hannigan Returns as ‘Lulu’ to La Monnaie

By Francisco Salazar

On Nov 2, 2021, Barbara Hannigan will reprise her signature turn in Berg’s “Lulu” in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production for La Monnaie in Brussels.

Hannigan’s first performances of the opera in 2012 saw her running into walls and on ballet pointes for almost the entire three-hour performance. Hannigan, incidentally, not a trained ballerina, met the significant physical and vocal demands of Alban Berg’s three-act magnum opus. The production addresses broad issues including psychology, gender, and feminism.

Since the 2012 production, Hannigan and Warlikowski have worked on productions of “Pelléas et Mélisande,” “La Voix Humaine,” “Don Giovanni,” and “Satie’s Socrate.”

The upcoming revival is also set to star  Natascha Petrinsky and Bo Skovhus. Alain Altinoglu will conduct the production. “Lulu” is set to be performed eight times through Nov. 18, 2021.
