Atlanta Opera’s 96-Hour Opera Project Documentary to Premiere on Georgia Public Broadcasting

By Afton Wooten

The Atlanta Opera Film Studio has announced the premiere of its 96-Hour Opera Project documentary.

The film will show the journey of five creative teams as they compete for the Antinori Grand Prize at The Atlanta Opera’s 96-Hour Opera Project. The project is designed as a talent incubator and competition for composers and librettists who self-identify as under-represented to create mini-operas on a presented theme. Industry leaders act as mentors and judges as the creatives write new mini-operas for a $10,000 grand prize in the competition.

In partnership with Oakland Cemetery and the Atlanta History Center, the teams were tasked to base their works on under-told stories of the lives of historic black Atlantans who are interred at The Oakland Cemetery. The documentary explores the process of creating, collaborating, performing, and awarding the Antinori Grand Prize.

The film features Zvulun, Carl W. Knobloch, Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, Mark Campbell, Doug Hooker, Priti Gandhi, Morris Robinson, Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Richard Harker. The creative teams featured are made up of Edward Shilts, Laura Barati, Omar Najmi, Catherine Yu, Nathan Felix, Anita Gonzalez, Dave Ragland, Selda Sahin, Jorge Sosa, and Alejandra Martinez. Zvulun and Felipe Barral serve as executive producers along with director and writer Cara Consilvio.

Atlanta Opera’s Tomer Zvulun said in a press release, “This documentary celebrates not only the ethnic diversity of the competing artists who created these stories but also the stories from Atlanta of those unsung heroes, those heroes who are woven into the history of this city that have also been under-represented in this town. It’s here we find our humanity.”

The documentary premieres on Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) live on air at 4 pm EDT on August 4, and will be streamed live online at GPB HD Live. It will also be available on the Passport and on the Atlanta Opera Film Studio streaming site.
