Atlanta Opera & Spelman College To Team Up For Angela Brown’s Opera…From A Sistah’s Point Of View

By Francisco Salazar

Spelman College and the Atlanta Opera are set to partner for Angela Brown’s signature program Opera “…from a Sistah’s Point of View.”

The free community performance will showcase Brown in a program which dispels the myths surrounding opera with a not-so-serious take on the stories and by demonstrating the ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic diversity portrayed in opera characters.

Brown’s mission with the program seeks to destroy the preconceived expectations of opera by mixing show-stopping arias, poignant art songs, and moving spirituals with tongue-in-cheek commentary.

In a press release, Brown stated, “Opera is not about being a certain way, dressing a certain way, speaking a certain way. It’s about experiencing, and opera is for everyone!”

Brown will be accompanied by pianist Mauro Ronca.

The concert will be held on Oct. 15 at Sisters Chapel on the Spelman College campus and on Oct. 16 Brown will lead a masterclass featuring students from Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University.
