This week the Lithuanian National Opera is set to bring a new production of “Aida” this week with one of the most sought-after sopranos of her generation.

Kristine Opolais will make her debut with the company in the title role of Aida, a work she last performed completely 15 years ago in Riga. The last time she performed a part of the work was in 2016 in a semi-staged version at Tanglewood. Back then critics raved, stating “she sang her part beautifully.” Now, seven years later, the Latvian soprano will bring it back to the stage.

The role  is one that Opolais admires, telling OperaWire that “it’s such a beautiful opera by Verdi.” Known for her Puccini interpretations, this will be a rare occasion to see the superstar in a Verdi work.

“Verdi’s music is still something I feel I have interest in and I need to go in this direction now,” Opolais added.

The soprano also noted that performing at the Lithuanian National Opera was a no-brainer as she is working with Sesto Quatrini, someone she enjoys working with.

For those not able to attend in Lithuania, the soprano is set to return to New York and Boston for “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She is also set to sing concerts in Brazil.

Opolais has several recent recordings including “Rusalka,” “Don Giovanni,” “Tosca,” “Mefistofele,” “Manon Lescaut,” “Simon Boccanegra” and “Eugene Onegin.”
