American Soprano Makes Her Role Debut in ‘La Sonnambula’

By Francisco Salazar

This week Rolando Villazón will bring his acclaimed production of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” to the Semperoper Dresden. The opera will feature a number of rising stars including Emily Pogorelc, who will take on the title role.

The production will mark Pogorelc’s role debut and house debut and will mark her first major Bellini opera; it is also one of her first principal roles in a major theater. A 2021 Operalia winner, the soprano recently joined the Bayerische Staatsoper ensemble and has a large repertoire that includes contemporary works as well as classics by Mozart, Verdi, Bernstein, and Puccini.

Over the years the soprano has been praised for her “remarkable talent, a lyric soprano with the capacity for lighter coloratura fireworks.”

This season, she will perform in a production of “Tannhäuser” at the Salzburg Easter Festival as well as in the Bayerische Staatsoper’s “Dialogues des Carmélites.”

Recordings

While the soprano doesn’t have any commercial recordings, here are some clips from productions of “Il Signor Bruschino,” “Candide,” and the Glyndebourne Opera Cup.
