Finnish Soprano Makes Role Debut As Turandot

By Francisco Salazar

This week, the Semperoper Dresden opened a revival of “Turandot,” one of Puccini’s most popular works. However, what made this revival special was the birth of a new interpreter of the title role.

Camilla Nylund made her role debut as Turandot, returning to Puccini after singing Tosca to great acclaim.

In a statement to OperaWire regarding her role debut as Turandot, the Finnish soprano said, “Dresden is where I have lived since 1999, and Semperoper is my beloved Opera house with a fantastic acoustic, great Orchestra, and wonderful people around! Turandot is a logical next step after Isolde and Brünnhilde, and I seize every opportunity to sing Italian repertory!”

Nylund is best known for her Germanic repertoire, singing many of Strauss and Wagner’s works. In reviews of her Strauss roles, OperaWire has stated that her “singing is pure luxury from top to bottom with a full tone that exuded elegance with every phrase.”

For those not in Dresden for the debut of Nylund’s “Turandot,” the soprano is set to return to the Wiener Staatsoper for performances of “Elektra.”
