Artist of the Week: Amina Edris
Egyptian / New Zealand Soprano Makes Metropolitan Opera Debut in ‘La Boheme’
By Francisco SalazarThis week the Metropolitan Opera will revive its iconic production of “La Bohème.” Among the headliners in the cast is soprano Amina Edris as Musetta, making her debut with the company.
Over the years, Edris has performed at the Opéra Comique, Staatsoper Berlin, Semperoper in Dresden and at Polish National Opera, among others.
OperaWire had a chance to speak with the soprano in a short interview in anticipation before her debut.
OperaWire: What does the Met mean to you and why is this debut so important to you?
Amina Edris: I think every young singer dreams of being on the Met stage at some point in their life. For me as an Egyptian / Kiwi, that dream felt even more out of reach, so to be able to stand on the Met stage and represent my people is a great honor.
OW: Tell me how you view the role of Musetta?
AE: Musetta’s character is a blend of glamour, charm, vulnerability, and emotional complexity. She may seem superficial at first glance, but her actions reveal a deeper, more compassionate person beneath the surface.
OW: When was the first time you saw the Zeiffrelli set and what are you excited about for this production?
AE: I remember watching this production on the Met on Demand app when I was a student. I must’ve watched all possible broadcasts that are available online. But I only managed to finally watch it live at the beginning of last year and it took my breath away. It is iconic in so many ways, and I am particularly looking forward to my entrance on the carriage, the infamous red dress and the grandiose nature of Act 2 with all the colleagues, chorus and actors!
