Anthony Roth Costanzo Announces Debut Book ‘Countertenor’
By David SalazarCountertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will publish his debut book, “Countertenor,” with Farrar, Straus and Giroux on Oct. 27, 2026.
The book combines the artist’s memoir, queer history, and cultural criticism, tracing the early evolution of opera and the history of the castrati through the science of the human voice, the modern history of countertenors, and the role of falsetto in popular culture. Costanzo also recounts his own career, which has included performances on major opera stages worldwide as well as stints as a child performer and actor.
The publication coincides with a companion album release on Nonesuch Records, Costanzo’s appearance in the Metropolitan Opera’s premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s new opera “Lincoln in the Bardo,” and his third season leading Opera Philadelphia as General Director and President.
“‘Countertenor’ offers an engaging and insightful portrait of the curiosity, imagination, and creative spirit that make him such a distinctive artist,” said composer Philip Glass, per advance promotional materials.
Costanzo is a Grammy Award-winning singer who has performed on many of the world’s leading opera stages.
