Anna Netrebko & Georg Zeppenfeld Win Big at Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis

The Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis announced its 10th annual awards on Sept. 13, 2022.

Anna Netrebko took home the Best Female Leading Role for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth in “Macbeth” while George Zeppenfeld won Best Male Leading role for in “Parsifal.”

The Theater an der Wien also received awards for the best opera production (“The Fiery Angel”), for which Andrea Breth received the Director’s Prize. Vera Lott Boecker won the Best Young Singer award for her portrayal of Michaela in “Carmen”  at the Wiener Staatsoper.

Conductor Seiji Ozawa was honored at the anniversary gala for his outstanding services to musical theater with the Special Award for “International Cultural Engagement,” and singer Gundula Janowitz was honored for her lifelong work.

The Opera House was also honored with ORF III for “We Play for Austria” with the Special Award for “Courage and Encouragement in Times of Pandemic.” Philip Jordan was awarded in the “Best Musical Achievement” category for his work with the Staatsoper.

Meanwhile, the Best Supporting Role for a Woman award went to Katherine Lerner for “Twice Through the Heart” at Landestheater Linz.  Freddie Di Tommaso received the award for Best Male Supporting Role as Macduff in “Macbeth” at the Wiener Staatsoper.

A special prize went to “Don Giovanni” from the Vienna Summer Youth Philharmonic 2 Academy in collaboration with the Graz Musical Society.
