Anita Rachvelishvili Protests Russia

By Francisco Salazar

Anita Rachvelishvili will not sing in Russia.

The mezzo-soprano vowed to boycott performing in the country due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia. She released a statement online that stated, “To avoid any misunderstandings and interpretations of my position about singing in Russia! I love Russian People who respect Georgia and our territories. I love Russian culture, Russian literature, Russian poetry, art, and music! I will continue to sing beautiful Russian music with pleasure and respect. Because Russian classical music is one of the best on this planet, but I will not sing in Russia because of the politics of this country! Because of Dictator Putin and because Putin is killing our people and stealing our lands!”

She added, “Instead of creating even more misunderstandings around this topic, please, try to understand our pain and support Georgia and Ukraine in this war against Putin! And again for those who didn’t understand: I love Russian People with all my heart, but Putin is a Devil and he needs to be stopped! Thank you all! With Love and respect!”

Rachvelishvili has been outspoken about the conflict in Georgia via social media in the past months.

For the past 10 days rallies voicing public anger at the news that Russian State Duma member Sergei Gavrilov took the Georgian parliament speaker’s seat during a June 20 meeting of lawmakers from Orthodox countries. The communist Gavrilov is known as a supporter of Georgia’s Russian-occupied, breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
