Andreas Schager Leads Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Tannhäuser’

Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” returns to the Metropolitan Opera for eight performances.

The opera will open on Nov. 30 and will be performed through Dec. 23, 2023 with a cast that includes Austrian tenor Andreas Schager, South African soprano Elza van den Heever as Elisabeth, and Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Venus.

The cast will be rounded out by German baritone Christian Gerhaher as Wolfram and German bass Georg Zeppenfeld. Maestro Donald Runnicles conducts Otto Schenk’s classic staging, which was first performed on December 22, 1977.

The Nov. 30, Dec. 12, and 23 performances of “Tannhäuser” will be broadcast live on the SiriusXM app. The Dec. 23 performance will also be broadcast over The Robert K. Johnson Foundation–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.
