Opera America will present “A Celebration of Daniel Catán” on April 30, 2021.

The stream will feature a one-hour and 15-minute concert with performances by such artists as Ana María Martinez, Cecilia Violetta López, Richard Troxell, and Ramón Vargas. There will also be appearances by artists from the Ópera de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

The event will also feature discussions by several of the composer’s friends and colleagues, including Andrea Puente-Catán, David Lomelí, and Eduardo Diazmuñoz.

Catán is the famed Mexican composer of such works as “Florencia en el Amazonas,” “La Hija de Rappaccini,” “Il Postino,” and “Salsipuedes.” Throughout his career he made history with several of his works; “Rappaccini” was the first Mexican opera in the United States to be produced by a professional company while “Florencia” was the first Opera in Spanish to be commissioned by an opera company in the United States.

Catán passed away on April 9, 2011 at the age of 62.
