Americas Society to Showcase Tango Adaptation of Gluck’s Most Renowned Opera

By David Salazar

Americas Society is teaming up with La Mama Experimental Theatre Club in New York City to present “Euridice, una sombra.”

The U.S. premiere features Gluck’s iconic work presented through the lens of tango. The reimagined version is set in a Buenos Aires tango club in the early 20th century and is scored for tango quartet. The arias are reorchestrated while the recitative are now replaced by poetic texts from famed tango lyricists such as José María Contrusi and Emilio Fresedo.

In this version, Euridice and Orfeo are the children of Italian immigrants, and they meet at the Buenos Aires carnival ball in the late 1930s. They fall in love and get married, but Amor, a pimp, kidnaps Euridice. From there, tragedy ensues.

The performance is set for July 2, 2025, at 7 p.m. local time.
