American Opera Project to Present ‘Music as Message: Sing Together, Children’ Celebrating Juneteenth

By Chris Ruel

The American Opera Project has announced the fourth live, interactive concert in the Music as Message series created and hosted by Emmy Award-winning soprano Adrienne Danrich. The concert will stream on Sunday, June 13, at 4:00 P.M. EDT.

“Music as Message: Sing Together, Children” celebrates Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June 19th, the date the United States fully realized the emancipation of the enslaved.

The celebration will capture the sorrow, joy, and accomplishments of African Americans, through multi-genre songs, poems, hymns, and personal reflections. The one-hour event is free to watch, with goodwill offerings accepted.

Guest artists include soprano Kisma Jordan, soprano Joelle Lamarre, and bass-baritone Dr. Michael Preacely. In a special appearance, 89-year-old Rose-Marie Bell will relate personal remembrances. Included in the program is the premiere of the newly commissioned arrangement of the song “Inside is what remains” by Nkeiru Okoye.

Danrich created Music as Message (MaM) as a live-streamed virtual series where music can unify, inspire healing, joy, laughter, love, and community. MaM encourages the audience to sing along (on mute) and interact with the artists post-concert.

Donations will support two New York City-based charities, Friends of the Children of New York City and Music Kitchen, as well as the New York City non-profit music organizations presenting the concert, the American Opera Project and Opera on Tap.
