American Opera Project & The National WWI Museum to Highlight Women’s Wartime Efforts in Online Presentation

By Logan Martell

On March 21, 2022, The American Opera Project and The National WWI Museum will explore the contributions of women during World War I in a free, live streamed presentation.

This event will draw from newly-transcribed letter from the museum’s archives, as well as selections from the AOP-developed opera, “Letters That You Will Not Get: Women’s Voices from the Great War,” by composer Kirsten Volness and librettists Susan Werbe and Kate Holland. Produced by Emitha LLC, this event will also include a keynote talk by Jennifer Orth-Veillon of WWrite Blog, and will be moderated by Kelly Kennedy, Managing Editor for The War Horse and U.S. Army veteran.

There will also be readings by the museum’s Curator of Education and Interpretation Lora Vogt, and AOP’s Director Mila Henry. The artists also include Sarah Beckham-Turner, Angel Desai, Briana Hunter, Tesia Kwarteng, Maria Lindsey, Caitlin McKechney, and Jessica Sandidge.

Supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and funding from OPERA America’s Opera Grants for Female Composers program, “Letters That You Will Not Get” is set to receive its full premiere on July 28, 2022, in an AOP production directed by Kate Bergstrom and music directed by Mila Henry.
