By David Salazar

The American Opera Project has unveiled the participants of its 12th Composers & the Voice Training Program.

This year’s participants include composers JL Marlor, Joshua Brown, Joy Redmond, Kavita Shah, Kervy Delcy, and Leighton White, as well as librettists Aiden K. Feltkamp, Andi Lee Carter, Anita Gonzalez, and Melisa Tien. This group will get a chance to work alongside the Composers & the Voice Resident Ensemble of Singers including Natalie Trumm, Makayla McDonald, Ilene Pabon, Brian Jeffers, Phillip Bullock, and Hans Tashjian.

As part of the fellowships, the selected artists will also work on career development through the American Opera Project and its partnerships. Sessions will take place between September 2023 and April 2025 with the participants composing solo works for six voice times. They will also engage with over 45 hours of “Skill-Building Sessions” with such luminaries as Terry Greiss and Mark Campbell, among others. They will also get guidance from “Artistic Chairs.”

Once the workshops are completed, the fellows will present their works in public performances in May 2024 and January 2025; the former will be a concert of songs with the latter an evening of short opera scenes.
