American Modern Ensemble to World Premiere Robert Paterson and David Cotes’ ‘Cocoa Cantata’

By Logan Martell

The American Modern Ensemble is set to present the world premiere of composer Robert Paterson and librettist David Cote’s “Cocoa Cantata.”

This new work is a response to Bach’s “Coffee Cantata,” and follows two feuding chocolate executives who are transformed when they have a single bite of a scientifically-engineered super cocoa. Using Bach’s instrumentation, the work is written for soprano, baritone, bass-baritone, and features artists Cree Carrico, Steven Stull, and David Neal, respectively.

The program will also include a modern adaptation of “Coffee Cantata,” with a new vision to match the new English libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici.

“Cocoa Cantata” will premiere on June 3 at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY, with performances on June 13 and 14 at CRS Barn Stage in Ithaca, June 15 at Rose Hall in Cortland, June 17 and 18 at Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs, and June 20 at Chelsea Market in NYC.
