Allegations of Sexual Harassment Surface at Finnish National Opera

By Francisco Salazar

Several allegations of sexual harassment at the Finnish National Opera have surfaced.

In a recent publication by Long Play, more than 10 women were interviewed and described dozens of instances of harassment at the theater. According to the article some of the harassment included groping, sending text messages with sexual content, and commenting on body parts.

General Director Gita Kadambi was contacted and “admitted there had been several incidents at the opera house involving inappropriate behavior and harassment over the past few years.”

He added, “The instances are monitored and responded to appropriately. A warning is issued and if the behavior continues, the person is fired.”

According to the article, the women noted that they don’t know who to contact when harassed and the General Direcor admitted, “The National Opera does not have an actual harassment contact person. However, people can turn to, for example, a close supervisor, workplace safety manager or occupational health officer.”

Currently, the opera house is trying to reduce harassment through training, regulations and other support measures.
