Adolphus Hailstork Receives Composers Now 2023 Vision Award

Adolphus Hailstork has received the Composers Now 2023 Vision Award.

Hailstork was awarded on Jan. 30, 2023. He received the reward remotely.

He has composed a wide range of works, including three operas: “Joshua’s Boots,” “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground,” and “Rise for Freedom: The John P. Parker.”

Hailstork’s previous accolades include the 1971 Ernest Bloch Award for Choral Composition, the Brock Commission from the American Choral Directors Association, and the 2001 Honorary Doctorate from the College of Willam and Mary, among many others.

Per its official website, “The Composers Now Visionary Award recognizes members of the arts community who, through their own creative practice and advocacy for others, have made a profound, positive and lasting impact on our culture.  Composers Now presents the Visionary Awards each year at the Composers Now Festival Opening Event.”

Past winners include Mary D. Watkins, David Del Tredici, Joan Tower, Carman Moore, Laura Kaminsky, and T.J. Anderson, among many others.
