Adela Zaharia, Tuuli Takala, Rolando Villazón & Maria José Siri lead Semperoper Dresden’s 2022-23 Season

Semperoper Dresden has announced its 2022-23 season featuring 10 brand new and 30 returning productions in both opera & ballet and its Junge Szene program. 

Here is a look at the opera productions

Premieres 

“chasing waterfalls Angus Lee/phase7/kling klang klong” makes its world premiere conducted by the composer Angus Lee and staged by Sven Sören Beyer. The cast includes Eir Inderhaug, Mariya Taniguchi, Roxana Incontrera, Sebastian Wartig, Simeon Esper, and Nicole Chirka.

Performance Dates: Sept. 3-11, 2022

Verdi’s “La Traviata” is set to be directed by Barbora Horáková with Stefano Ranzani and Leonardo Sini. Adela Zaharia makes her company debut in the title role, Liparit Avetisyan, and Simone Piazzola. Tuuli Takala also stars.

Performance Dates: Oct. 2-30, 2022

Georg Zeppenfeld, Andrzej Dobber, Anna Smirnova, and Tomislav Mužek star in concert performances of Verdi’s “Attila.” Jordi Bernàcer conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 4-11, 2023

Yura Yang conducts the new production of Reimann’s “Die Gespenstersonate” by Corinna Tetzel. The production is set to star Andrew Nolen, Michael Pflumm, Jürgen Müller, Sarah Alexandra Hudarew, Katerina von Bennigsen, Matthias Henneberg, Dame Justyna Ołów, and Nicole Chirka

Performance Dates: Feb. 17-May 23, 2023

Evelino Pidò conducts Rolando Villazón’s new production of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula,” which is a co-production with the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Metropolitan Opera and the Opéra de Nice Côte d’Azur. The opera is set to star Georg Zeppenfeld, Tuuli Takala, and Maxim Mironov. Bogdan Talos also stars in later performances as Rodolfo. 

Performance Dates: April 30-May 5, 2023

Rolando Villazón stars in the title role of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” alongside Nikola Hillebrand, Anastasiya Taratorkina, Stepanka Pucalkova, Eric Jurenas, Bogdan Talos, Ute Selbig, Tilmann Rönnebeck, and Simeon Esper. Conductor Wolfgang Katschner leads the new production by Nikolaus Habjan.

Performance Dates: April 30-May 18, 2023

Tchaikovksy’s “Pique Dame” is set to star Sergey Polyakov, John Lundgren, Christoph Pohl, Evelyn Herlitzius, Vida Miknevičiūtė, and Michal Doron. Mikhail Tatarnikov conductors the production by Andreas Dresen.

Junge Szene

Alexander Ritter, Larissa Wäspy, Rupert Grössinger, Christiane Hossfeld, and Gerald Hupach star in “Das schlaue Gretchen” by Martin Smolka. Thomas Leo Cadenbach conducts Andrea Kramer’s production.

Performance Dates: Dec. 22, 2022-Jan. 9, 2023

“The Toxic Avenger” by David Bryan and Joe Dipietro will be conducted by Alexander Hoetzinger and staged by Manfred Weiß. Christian Venzke and Anna Overbeck stars.

Catherine Hunold and Gregory Kunde lead Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Sarah Aristidou, Angela Brower, and Sebastian Wartig. Omer Meir Wellber conducts.

Weber’s “Der Freischütz” stars Sebastian Wartig, Matthias Henneberg, Johanni van Oostrum, Nikola Hillebrand, Günther Groissböck, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Alexandros Stavrakakis, and Ilya Silchuk. Antonello Manacorda conducts.

Camilla Nylund, Sophie Koch, Markus Eiche, and Tuuli Takala star in Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” with Christian Thielemann conducting.

Performance Dates: March 25-April 10, 2023

Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” will star Jürgen Müller, Hulkar Sabirova, Mert Süngü, Marina Viotti, and Nikola Hillebrand. As second cast is set to star Hrachuhí Bassénz, Stepanka Pucalkova, and Katerina von Bennigsen. John Fiore and Georg Fritzsch conducts.

Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” returns with Christian Thielmann conducting that includes Georg Zeppenfeld, Vitalij Kowaljow, Adrian Eröd, Tomislav Mužek, Daniel Behle, Julia Kleiter, and Christa Mayer.

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” will star Georg Zeppenfeld, Aleksandra Olczyk, Nikola Hillebrand, Joseph Dennis, Michael Nag, Julia Sitkovetsky, Sofia Fomina, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Bernhard Hansky, Martin Mitterrutzner, Tuuli Takala, Bea Güldner, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Sebastian Wartig, Kathryn Lewek, Beomjin Kim, Ilya Silchuk, Joseph Dennis, and Mauro Peter. Jonathan Darlington conducts.

Elena Gorshunova, Elena Maximova, Tuuli Takala, Ekaterina Bakanova, Jonah Hoskins, Maxim Mironov, Georg Zeppenfeld, Maurizio Muraro, Martin-Jan Nijhof, Andrei Zhilikhovsky, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Justyna Ołów, Ofeliya Pogosyan, Tamara Gura, Ilya Silchuk, and Gerald Hupach lead Rossini’s “Il Viaggio a Reims.” Gaetano d’Espinosa conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 7-19, 2022

Puccini’s “La Bohème” returns with multiple casts. The first cast is headlined by Hrachuhí Bassénz, Ofeliya Pogosyan, Atalla Ayan, Sebastian Wartig, Ilya Silchuk, Martin-Jan Nijhof, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen, and Bernd Zettisch. The second cast will star Maria Teresa Leva and Bogdan Baciu while the third cast will include Nikola Hillebrand, Tomislav Mužek, Lawson Anderson, and Markus Marquardt. In January and February performances audiences will get to hear Jonathan Tetelman and Alexey Markov while Galeano Salas will perform the role of Rodolfo in March. In April and May Sofia Fomina and  Dmytro Popov take on the lead roles of Rodolfo and Mimi.

Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” returns in Damiano Michieletto’s production.

Performance Dates: June 4-25, 2023

Christoph Pohl, Julia Kleiter, Anita Hartig, Heidi Stober, Luca Pisaroni, Anna Stéphany, and Stepanka Pucalkova star in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with Georg Fritzsch conducting.  The opera will also star Sebastian Wartig, Katerina von Bennigsen, and Lawson Anderson in later productions.

Meyerbeer’s “Les Huguenots” returns in a production by Peter Konwitschny,

Philippe Talbot sings the title role of Rameau’s “Platée” with Ilya Silchuk, Andreas Wolf, Ute Selbig, Mark Milhofer, Sebastian Wartig, Alice Rossi, Inga Kalna, and Katerina von Bennigsen. Paul Agnew conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 10-21, 2022

Pavol Breslik, Markus Marquardt, Tuuli Takala, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Christa Mayer, Georg Zeppenfeld, Ioan Hotea, Andrzej Dobber, Nikola Hillebrand, and Michal Doron star in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” Paolo Arrivabeni and Stefano Ranzani conduct.

Dvorak’s “Rusalka” returns to the stage Tomislav Mužek, Elena Guseva, Olesya Golovneva, Maxim Kuzmin-Karavaev, and Michal Doron. Erik Nielsen conducts.

Johannes Wulff-Woesten conducts Zimmerman’s Weiße Rose” with Franz Xaver Schlecht.

Spoliansky’s “Wie werde ich reich und glücklich?” will be performed with Max Renne conducting Nathalie Parsa, Elke Kottmair, Aaron Pegram, Matthias Henneberg, David Pichlmaier, Menna Cazel, and Barbara Neundlinger.

Performance Dates: Oct. 13-26, 2022

The Ring Cycle 

The company will present Ring Cycles with Christian Thielemann conducting. The cast of singers will include Christa Mayer, Tuuli Takala, Anna Gabler, John Lundgren, Andreas Schager, Georg Zeppenfeld, Markus Marquardt, Jürgen Sacher, Martin Gantner, Stephen Milling, Waltraud Meier, Jürgen Sacher, and Mirella Hagen.
