Philadelphia Orchestra Losses NEA Funding for Pride Concert
By Francisco SalazarAs Pride Month kicks off, the Philadelphia Orchestra has announced that it has lost its National Endowment for the Arts funding for its Pride Concert.
The orchestra announced the news via social media, noting, “The Philadelphia Orchestra is a nonprofit organization that believes in the power of music to bring people together, create understanding, and speak to the human spirit. Earlier this month, the National Endowment for the Arts rescinded critical funding for our Pride Concert, taking place on June 4.”
As a result, the orchestra is fundraising for the concert that will proceed as planned. The organization said, “Thanks to a generous gift from Dr. James F. Dougherty, all donations made by June 30 will be matched dollar for dollar—up to $100,000. Join us in celebrating the values that make our city and our Orchestra a beacon of pride!”
The Pride concert will include Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting Martha Graham Cracker, Freddie Ballentine, Stuart Skelton, Brian Mulligan, and Tareq Nazmi.
