The State Opera and Ballet Theatre in Novosibirsk in Siberia has canceled Anna Netrebko’s June 2 concert.

The theater said, “Yesterday, the artist made a statement condemning the actions of our state. Living in Europe and the opportunity to perform at European venues turned out to be more important for her than the fate of the Motherland. Today is not the time to sacrifice principles for more comfortable living conditions. Now is the time to make a choice.

The company also noted, “We are sure that the truth is with us. We should not be afraid that there are cultural figures who renounce their homeland. Our country is rich in talents and yesterday’s idols will be replaced by others with a clear civic position, NOVAT said in a statement.”

The news comes after Netrebko released a third statement condemning the War in Ukraine and distanced herself from Putin. According to Russian state-run media, Netrebko’s social media pages have now been banned following her statement.

The State Opera and Ballet Theatre in Novosibirsk’s next performances include soprano Veronika Dzhioeva, who recently replaced Netrebko at Zurich Opera’s “Macbeth” and Ksenia Dudnikova.
