San Francisco Opera Explores ‘Fidelio’ in Newest Episode of ‘North Stage Door’

By Logan Martell

In anticipation of its upcoming production of “Fidelio,” San Francisco Opera has released a new episode of their podcast “North Stage Door,” featuring discussions on Beethoven’s work.

The episode features director Matthew Ozawa, former US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, SFO Chorus Director Ian Robertson, participants in the Prison Arts Project at San Quentin State Prison, and other guests, as they share their insights and experiences with the opera.

In addition to exploring the themes of love and isolation in “Fidelio,” the discussion will include a segment which gives a look into the backstage and orchestra pit. Managing Director of Production Jennifer Good will be joined by production members Chris Davis and Chris Largent to discuss the process of putting everything together, with percussionist Patti Niemi and bassoonist Rufus Olivier sharing their experiences as members of the SFO Orchestra.

Episode 3 of “North Stage Door” is available to stream for free on SFO’s website, as well as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other major podcasting platforms.
