The Houston Grand Opera has announced that it will cancel 33 of 47 performances throughout the 2020-21 season due to continued concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak.

The company announced that productions of “Carmen,” “Cinderella, “Werther,” “The Snowy Day,” and “Parsifal” would no longer be taking place. Instead, the organization will only move forward with performances of “Breaking the Waves” in April 2021 and “The Sound of Music” throughout the first half of May 2021.

“To say this has been a difficult year is an understatement,” Janet Carrig, HGO board chair, said in a press release. “Our top priority remains the safety of our audiences, our artists, and our staff, and under the guidance of health officials, we had to make this painful decision. We are navigating a situation that still holds a lot of unknowns, and the effect of this pandemic on arts organizations around the world is overwhelming. I have worked with Perryn and Patrick for the past two years and know that they will do everything possible to get the company through this situation.”

The cancelations will reduce the company’s fiscal year 2021 expenses from $30.7 million to $20.6 million.

Instead, the company will present bi-monthly video content for audiences. There will be a media project about “The Snowy Day,” which stars Julia Bullock in her HGO Debut. The opera, which was slated for its world premiere this season, will be postponed until a future season.
