Cheltenham Music Festival Unveils 2020 Season
By David SalazarThe Cheltenham Music Festival has announced its 2020 season, its 76th edition, which was curated by composer and innovator Jules Buckley. For the purposes of this article our prime focus will be on vocal and operatic offerings.
Mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly and tenor Andrew Staples will perform Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” in an arrangement by Iain Farrington. The concert, which will be conducted by Nicholas Collon and the Aurora Orchestra, will also include Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.”

Tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Imogen Cooper will perform songs by Beethoven and Schumann.

Conralto Hilary Summers will take on a program that feature smusic by Handel, Rossini, and Bizet as well as an introduction to baroque music and “The Essential Magic Flute.” Pianist Andrew West will perform alongside her.

Tenor Allesandro Fisher will perform with pianist Elisabeth Brauss and the Aris Quartet in a program that currently includes Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor.

Mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and the Aris Quartet will take on music by Kurtág and Shostakovich.

The Chapel Choir of Merton College Oxford will perform music of Byrd, Finzi, Howells, and Harvey.

Tenebrae will perform a concert entitled “Sounds of the Solstice” with music of Bennett, Chilcott, Marsh, Maxwell Davies, Poulenc, Holst, Wilian, Macilan, and Rutter.

Adrian Partington will conduct a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with a cast that includes Elizabeth Llewellyn, Elizabeth Watts, Robyn Allegra Parton, Claudia HUckle, Hilary Summers, Thomas Elwin, Benedict Nelson, and James Platt.

Mezzo-soprano Chloé Underwood will appear in “Beethoven Up-Close” with harpist Richard Allen, violinist Matthew Denton, cellist Emma Denton, and pianist Clare Hammond.
