There are few debuts at the Metropolitan Opera House in 2019-20 as hotly anticipated as that of soprano Lise Davidsen. Called a “voice in a million,” and a “Once in generation Wagnerian” by Opera Now, the Norwegian diva is renowned for her work in more dramatic repertory, including the works of Wagner and Strauss.

But on Friday night, she will showcase her dramatic soprano in something a bit different – Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades.”

She will be just the 11th singer to take on the role in the Met Opera’s history and the first to do so in eight years. Her performance is most definitely set to be a major success for Davidsen as she is already reportedly scheduled to take on five operas with the company over the next three seasons. Those works include “Ariadne auf Naxos,” “Fidelio,” “Elektra,” “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,” and “Der Rosenkavalier.”

Those unable to check out Davidsen fateful debut on Friday can still see the soprano perform “Fidelio” in London this March, followed by “Tannhäuser” and “Die Walküre” in Bayreuth this summer.

Recordings

The soprano recently released her debut album, which features music of Strauss and Wagner. She has also appeared on a recent recording of “Der Freischütz” as well as an album dedicated to Grieg. She also performed in “As Dreams” and John Frandsen’s “Songs” album.
