By David Salazar

Utopia Opera will showcase the New York Premiere of Thea Musgrave’s “The Story of Harriet Tubman.

Performances are set for Nov. 10, 11, 16, and 17 at the Lang Recital Hall at Hunter College.

The production will be led by Utopia Opera’s artistic and music director Will Remmers with direction by Viktoria I.V. King.

MaKayla McDonald stars in the title role with Markel Reed as Josiah, Karmesha Peake as Ri, Virdell Williams as Ben, and Andrew Dwan as Mr. Garrett, among others.

“At one time or another, most of us have asked the question ‘but what can one person do?’” Musgrave noted in a press release. “Harriet Tubman is an inspiration to those of us who despair of being able to make any positive change in the world in which we live.

“Black people do not lack for heroes and heroines, but Harriet Tubman certainly deserves an exalted place in the history of mankind’s struggle for human rights.”
