Tenor Joel Prieto to Open Season with Opera Nacional de Chile’s ‘Don Giovanni’

By Logan Martell

Puerto Rican tenor Joel Prieto is set to sing the role of Don Ottavio when Opera Nacional de Chile opens its  season with a production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

This will be Prieto’s third time performing at Chile’s Teatro Municipal, having made his debut there in 2009 as Arlecchino in “Pagliacci,” and returning in 2014 for “The Magic Flute.” Prieto says, “I have fantastic memories of the work we did four years ago at the Municipal, a theatre in which marvellous things can be done, and I am sure that audiences will have a great time with this ‘Don Giovanni,’ which is fresh and full of dramatism.”

Prieto will be joined onstage by Levent Bakirci in the role of Don Giovanni, Michelle Bradley as Donna Anna, Edwin Crossley-Mercer as Leporello, and Paulina Gonzalez as Donna Elvira.

Following this, Prieto will be returning to Puerto Rico in May to give a concert with the San Juan Children’s Choir, and then to Madrid, Spain, for a recital at the Malaga Clasica Festival.

Audiences in Chile can see Prieto in “Don Giovanni” on April 16, 20, 23, and 26, 2018.
