Teatro alla Scala Workers Authorize Strike

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala workers have voted to authorize a strike on Oct. 20, 2026.

The strike was approved on Oct. 12, 2026 at a workers’ assembly called by the Cgil, Cisl, Uil and Fials unions and saw 449 out of 450 participants vote for the move.

According to reports the dispute concerns the renewal of the theatre’s contract, which will run for three years from 2027. Workers are demanding a 15 percent rise in gross annual pay and they want a meeting with the theatre’s board of directors.

The Cub union is also asking for a payment of €500 per employee, a further 10 per cent pay rise, shorter working hours and recognition for staff at the Ansaldo workshops.

If the strike goes forward it will affect the opening night of Gounod’s “Faust,” which is set to open on Oct. 20 and will star  Vittorio Grigolo, Marina Rebeka, and Alex Esposito.

This is the latest company to authorize a strike in the past months. Other companies have included the San Francisco Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Cleveland Orchestra.
