Theater Bonn Announces Extension of Dr. Bernhard Helmich’s Contract
By Francisco SalazarTheater Bonn has announced that Dr. Bernhard Helmich has extended his contract as General Intendant through the 2029-30 season.
The Council of the Federal City of Bonn announced the news and agreed to the contract extension.
Helmich began his tenure in 2012 and has evolved the venue into one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s leading musical theater houses with 462 performances and over 213,000 visitors in the 2025-26 season.
The new contract extension comes as Helmich is overseeing the “Zukunftsagenda Bonner Bühnen” (Future Agenda for Bonn’s Stages) transformation process, which encompasses the future of the theater’s physical facilities.
In a statement Helmich said, “The Council’s approval sends a positive signal. With the resulting planning stability, Theater Bonn—together with Bonn’s cultural stakeholders—will now drive the transformation process forward in a sustainable manner.”
Mayor Guido Déus added, “For many years, Dr. Helmich has stood for a strong artistic profile, successful audience engagement, and the dedicated development of Theater Bonn. His experience is a tremendous asset, especially during the upcoming transformation phase.”
