English National Opera Announces ‘AbracadOpera!’

English National Opera will present “AbracadOpera!,” its children’s introduction to opera, as a live event at the London Coliseum on Feb. 12, 2027.

Educational entertainer MC Grammar hosts. The show blends elements of the original comedy musical drama, produced by ENO and Somethin’ Else TV Studio for Sky Kids and aired in 2022, with live performances and audience participation. Soprano Nazan Figaret and baritone Alex Otterburn, a former Harewood Artist, perform alongside the Chorus and Orchestra of ENO. Andrew McCaldon conceived and wrote the show.

The story follows two students, Tia and Frankie, and their teacher, MC Grammar, who try to stage an opera at school after a broken down bus cancels a trip to the opera. At the Coliseum they meet Brünnhilde from Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” who gathers Figaro from Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” Rodolfo from Puccini’s “La bohème,” and the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” for a race against the clock.

The show, which commences at 11 a.m. local time, runs 45 minutes and is aimed at primary schools, home learning students, and their carers. The live event will also be presented in Greater Manchester as part of ENO’s 2027-28 season, with venue and dates to be announced.

“Where else could you see Mozart’s fearsome Queen of the Night join forces with Rossini’s fun-loving Figaro for a magical race against time? With a brilliant story, humor, excitement and some extraordinary singing, ‘AbracadOpera!’ is a wonderful first adventure into opera,” Beth Warnock, director of ENO Engage, said, per an official press release. “We want young people to come away surprised by what opera can be – exciting, thrilling, funny and full of possibility. We can’t wait to welcome children and young people to the London Coliseum and share in their first experience of opera.”
