Musicians of Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Working Without Contract
By Francisco SalazarThe musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, represented by the American Federation of Musicians Local 101-473, are working for the first time since June without a new contract.
Their agreement with the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) expired with no new deal in place, despite months of negotiations and a season of warnings from musicians and the community, including a petition signed by nearly 2,000 residents and a unanimous vote of no confidence in DPAA leadership.
In a statement AFM said, “Our members are showing up and performing at the highest level, because that is what professionals do and because this community deserves it, but nobody should mistake that professionalism for acceptance of a situation that is anything but normal. For months, we have negotiated in good faith, bringing serious proposals to the table and making real compromises in pursuit of a fair agreement, only to be met with cuts and delays while our musicians pay the price. We are calling on the DPAA board, our patrons, and Dayton’s civic leaders to tell management it is time to get serious and reach a deal that keeps world-class music in this community.”
The news comes after musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra rallied to defend the future of the organization on June 18, 2026.
