Renée Fleming Announces New Album ‘The Fiddle and the Drum’

By Francisco Salazar

Renée Fleming has announced a new crossover album titled “The Fiddle and the Drum.”

The soprano announced the album via social media and said, “I’m excited to announce my new album with Bela Fleck, The Fiddle and the Drum, will be released on May 29 via Thirty Tigers! You can listen to our debut single  “In The Pines” featuring the iconic Dolly Parton now!”

She added, “Growing up among musicians and educators, I absorbed music of pretty much every genre. My grandfather had been a fiddler and a drummer in rural Pennsylvania. As a teenager, I was strongly influenced by Joni Mitchell. I was a guitarist and pianist then, and I learned to play the dulcimer, learning her alternate tunings, and I wrote my own music as well. I became fascinated by the long, trans-Atlantic history of American and Appalachian folk singing. I still remember where I was when I first heard Hazel Dickens. This album celebrates the traditions of Appalachian bluegrass and folk music, telling stories and sharing feelings that shape all our lives, and its power is universal. Recording in this world for the first time, to have Béla as my collaborator has been the most amazing gift. A virtuosic musical explorer, his mastery of the banjo extends across an incredibly wide range of styles. And he is as phenomenal a producer as he is a musician.”

The album will include collaborations with Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan, Sierra Hull, and Sarah Jarosz.

The soprano is set to go on tour with Fleck performing at there Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Chautauqua Festival, Carnegie Hall, and Spoleto Festival USA.

Fleming is no stranger to crossover as she has released a rock album “Dark Hope” and has also performed in recording of jazz standards.
