Peter Gelb Plans to Retire from Metropolitan Opera in 2030

By Francisco Salazar

Peter Gelb has announced that he plans to retire at the end of the 2030.

The news comes as the Metropolitan Opera has announced its 2026-27 season and as he marks his 20th anniversary with the company.

According to the Associated Press the General “says he intends to retire when his current contract expires in 2030.” He said, “That certainly is our current plan.”

Gelb’s contract was recently renewed in September when it was revealed via an article in the New York Times announcing a new deal with Saudi Arabia that would see the company become the winter resident company at the Royal Diriyah Opera House.

Gelb has been at the Met since 2006 and has seen the company through a number of financial woes including two credit downgrades and dips into the endowment. This season the company has seen ticket sales rise to 72 percent from 70 percent in the first half of 2024-25.
