Peter Gelb Extends Contract with the Metropolitan Opera Through 2030
By Francisco SalazarPeter Gelb has extended his contract as General Manager at the Metropolitan Opera through 2030.
The news was revealed via an article in the New York Times announcing a new deal with Saudi Arbia that would see the company become the winter resident company at the Royal Diriyah Opera House,
The news also comes a few days after Gelb told El Pais that he would like to remain with the company longer than his previous extension which was set to end in 2027. He said, “I feel ready to continue beyond that date if the board of the Met wants me to.”
Gelb has been at the Met since 2006 and has seen the company through a number of financial woes including two credit downgrades and dips into the endowment. The new deal with the Saudis will allow the cover the Met’s financial needs through at least 2032 and help the company avoid further withdrawals from its endowment for emergency funds.
