Obituary: Soprano Marcella de Osma Dies at 92
By Francisco SalazarSoprano Marcella de Osma has died at the age of 92.
Soprano Saioa Hernández first shared the news stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our beloved Marcella de Osma, a world-renowned artist and, above all, a wonderful person. A performer of some of the greatest roles in the repertoire, she was a regular on stages such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, among many others, as well as the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, especially between the 1950s and 1970s.”
She added, “Thanks to our dear Armando Ariostini, we had the good fortune to share friendship and precious moments at her home in Milan during my performances of Tosca at the Teatro alla Scala. It was there that Marcella gave me this photograph of herself performing the same role at the Milanese opera house. We were able to talk about the profession, vocal technique, and life in general, and thanks to that encounter, we stayed in touch over the years through calls and messages. Francesco and I feel immensely fortunate to have known the beloved Maestro de Osma personally. And although we are saddened to know that she is no longer with us, we know that her art and her beautiful soul will live on forever in the memory of so many people whose lives she touched with her generosity and her wonderful artistry.”
Born on June 16, 1934, the soprano was a well known dramatic coloratura who debuted in 1954 at the Teatro Nuovo.
She went on to have a prestigious career at the Teatro alla Scala and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in the 1960s and 1970s performing such roles as Odabella in “Attila,” Abigaille in “Nabucco, the title roles of “Beatrice di Tenda,” “Norma,” “Aida,” “Manon Lescaut,” “Tosca,” and La Gioconda.” She also sang Lady Macbeth in “Macbeth,” Amelia in “Un ballo in maschera,” Elvira in “Ernani,’ Margherita in Mefistofele” and the Leonoras in “La forza del destino” and “Il trovatore.”
