Tulsa Opera Announces Applications for 2026 Art of the Opera Initiative
By David SalazarTulsa Opera will showcase the talents of several visual artists, writers, poets, ceramists, sculptors, jewelers, and other creatives as part of its 2026 Art at the Opera initiative.
The company has sent out an invitation for artists to attend the company’s production of “The Pirates of Penzance” and create original works inspired by the performance or their experience at the opera. “The Pirates of Penzance” performances are January 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. and February 2, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at the Lorton Performance Center, University of Tulsa.
Participants receive promotion through Tulsa Opera’s platforms and the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work at a sponsored event in partnership with the J’Parle’ Artist Group Inc. (JAG). Artists set their own prices and retain 100 percent of sales. There is no cost to participate.
“Art at the Opera is a celebration of Tulsa’s rich creative community and a unique opportunity to build dialogue between art forms,” said Dani Keil, Tulsa Opera’s Director of Community Engagement. “By inviting local writers and visual artists to respond to the magic of opera, we expand the impact of the production beyond the stage. This season’s Pirates of Penzance will be a witty and spirited source of inspiration.”
The company tried this program back in April during its performance of Dvořák’s “Stabat Mater,” with such visual artists as Robert Founds, Alexis Frazier, and Rosanne Schaefer presenting their works at a rooftop exhibition and concert at the Brut Hotel in September.
Applications open on Dec. 1, 2025, with selections notified by Dec. 15.
