Obituary: Conductor Guillermo Brizzio Dies

The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires has announced the death of maestro Guillermo Brizzio.

The famed Argentine theater took to social media and said, “The Teatro Colon bids farewell with great sadness to teacher Guillermo Brizzio, who served as Director of Theater Studies between 2005 and 2007. He was also the musical director of the Chamber Opera and integrated the cast of in-house masters. With a long run as musical director in our country and abroad, he directed the Symphony Orchestra of Bay Blanca and the Orchestra of the San Martín Theater of Tucuman.”

Birzzio was  Studies Director of the Teatro Argentina from 1977 to 1979, and also led the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bahía Blanca between 1980 and 1985. He was also the Artistic Director and Music Director of the Orquesta Estable del Teatro San Martín de Tucumán in 1987, 1989, and 1990.

He went on to collaborate with the Theater & Philharmonie Essen and Aalto Theater. In 2002, he was Music Director of the Ópera de Cámara at the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, where he conducted such operas as Rossini’s “L’occasione fà il ladro” and “El emperador de la Atlántida” by Ullmann. He also conducted such operas as “Macbeth,” “Der Freischütz,” “Le nozze di Figaro,” “Faust,” “L’italiana in Algeri,” and “I Puritani.”
