Elena Stikhina Lead Dutch National Opera’s Production of ‘The Maid of Orleans’
By Francisco SalazarThe Dutch National Opera is set to present a new production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Maid of Orleans.”
The opera, which will be performed between Nov. 12 and Dec. 2, 2025, will be directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov and will be a co-production with The Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Conductor Valentin Uryupin will make his debut at Dutch National Opera, leading the Netherlands Philharmonic. Elena Stikhina will sing the title role leading a cast that includes Allan Clayton as King Charles VII, Andrey Zhilikhovsky as Lionel, and Vladislav Sulimsky as Dunois. John Relyea rounds out the cast as the Archbishop.
Tchaikovsky’s opera is based on a play of the same name by Friedrich Schiller, who showcases Joan’s determination put to the test when she suddenly falls in love with the enemy knight Lionel.
In Tcherniakov’s production, the director situates the events in a courtroom where Joan is called to account for her actions and put in the spotlight in a trial that focuses on her as an individual, as someone who questions the dominant norms and tries to stay true to herself in the midst of a corrupt society.
