24-Year-Old Klaus Mäkelä To Become Orchestra de Paris’ Next Music Director

By David Salazar

The Orchestre de Paris has announced that Klaus Mäkelä will be its next music director.

The 24-year-old Finn will initiate his five-year tenure with the French orchestra in 2022, succeeding Daniel Harding whose time with the orchestra ended in August of 2019. Before he assumes the role of music director, he will be Music Advisor between Sept. 1 through August 2022.

In his new position, he will conduct a total of 12 weeks of concerts each year, both at home and on tour.

Mäkelä is slated to perform a concert with the Orchestre on July 9 when the organization returns after the hiatus imposed by the spread of COVID-19.

Mäkëla, who was born in 1996, made his first appearance as a conductor with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the age of 21. He would become the organization’s Principal Guest Conductor a year later. From there he would be appointed to the position of principal conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic; he begins his seven-year tenure with the Oslo Philharmonic in 2020-21.
