Samantha Hankey has been named the first winner of the Glyndebourne Opera Cup.

The American mezzo was named the champion after the final on Saturday evening. She had been one of seven female finalists. She also took home the media prize.

She is coming off a solid year, having been among the winners of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions.

During the final she sang arias from “La Clemenza di Tito” and “La Finta Giardiniera.”

Second place went to American artist Jacquelyn Stucker and Elbenita Kajtazi took home third as well as the Audience Prize.

The Ginette Theano prize for most promising talent went to Emily Pogorelc.

The awards ceremony marks the end of the three-day competition. The 25 semifinalists made their cases throughout Thursday and Friday. Ten finalists were then selected for Saturday’s big showdown with each artist showcasing their talent in two Mozart arias.

The 10 finalists featured seven woman and three men, of which five were sopranos. A mezzo won.

WONDERFUL FINAL WITH SOME EXCITING TALENT. WOULD HAVE PREFERRED LESS ARTY NATTERING AND MORE SINGING. SURELY THERE WAS TIME TO HEAR BOTH ARIAS FROM EACH CONTESTANT ON FRIDAY AND A FULL ARIA ON THURSDAY! PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE OPERA WON’T WATCH THIS PROGRAMME SO PLEASE DON’T TALK DOWN TO US WHO DO. HOWEVER, IT’S FANTASTIC TO HAVE MY CARDIFF SINGER DEPRIVATION CATERED FOR AND I THOUGHT THIS WAS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS FAR AS THE SINGING WAS CONCERNED AND SAMANTHA HANKEY A WORTHY WINNER. I PICKED HER AS THE WINNER AFTER THE START OF HER SECOND ARIA. THE TWO OTHER FINALISTS ALSO DESERVED THEIR PLACINGS. WELL DONE EVERYBODY! MUCH AS I LOVE MOTZART, WOULD LIKE TO SEE OTHER COMPOSERS REPRESENTED NEXT TIME BUT I REALLY ENJOYED EVERYTHING. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS.

  3. Whilst my husband and I really liked the winner. She is already a very accomplished professional. I would prefer the prize to go the most promising singer who has no connections yet.
