Rolando Villazón has pulled out of Vienna State Opera’s “Eugene Onegin.”

The company announce on Wednesday that the tenor’s absence was due to health reasons.

As a result, Czech tenor Pavel Černoch will take over the role. The Czech tenor has performed with all the lead in companies in the world including the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, Teatro San Carlo, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Stuttgart Opera, Cologne Opera, Opernhaus Zurich, Théatre La Monnaie, Opéra National in Paris, Opéra de Lyon, Teatro Real Madrid, and Bolshoi Theatre.

Černoch recently performed Cavaradossi at the Greek National Opera and is next slated to appear in “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” in Paris.

Villazón returns to the stage for Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” in March and is expected to direct a new production of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.”

The Vienna State Opera’s revival of “Eugene Onegin” will star Maurisz Kwiecien, Olga Bezsmertna, and Ferruccio Furlanetto.
