Rihab Chaieb, Samantha Hankey, Vanessa Vasquez Among Operalia 2018 Semifinalists

The 2018 Operalia Competition has announced its semifinalists.

Per the official website, the singers have been whittled down to 24 artists for the opera competition and 12 for the Zarzuela section.

The semifinalists in the opera slate include soprano Zarina Abaeva, tenor Migran Agadzhanyan, soprano Cornelia Beskow, mezzo Rihab Chaieb, mezzo Emily D’Angelo, tenor Luis Gomes, mezzo Samantha Hankey, mezzo Elbenita Kajtazi, baritone Johannes Kammler, tenor Mingjie Lei, tenor Long Long, baritone Danylo Matviienko, tenor Petr Nekoranec, baritone Carles Pachón, bass Gleb Peryazev, tenor Pavel Petrov, tenor, baritone Sean Michael Plumb, soprano Marigona Qerkezi, bass-baritone Simon Shibambu, soprano Elizabeth Sutphen, mezzo Chiara Tirotta, soprano Vanessa Vasquez, mezzo Marina Viotti, and tenor Arseny Yakovlev.

The Zarzuela slate includes Chaieb, Gomes, D’Angelo, tenor Migran Agadzhanyan, tenor Mingjie Lei, bass-baritone Roberto Lorenzi, Matviienko, Nekoranec, baritone Carles Pachón, Petrov, mezzo Josy Santos, and Vasquez.

For those keeping track, the breakdown by FACH is as follows. For the opera competition, there are five sopranos, eight tenors, six mezzos, five baritones, one bass and one bass-baritone. The breakdown in the Zarzuela competition includes three mezzo-sopranos, two baritones, one bass-baritone, five tenors, and only one soprano.
