Legendary soprano and now teacher and director, Renata Scotto is set to direct a production of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” at the Opera Naples Renata Scotto Opera Academy this winter.

The company announced that it is now accepting auditions for three sessions of the Academy, with the second of these featuring a month-long production of the Donizetti opera.

Per the press release, “Madame Scotto serves as stage director with Ramón Tebar conducting.  In this session, participants will study the roles in L’Elisir d’Amore through vocal lessons, coaching sessions, and staging rehearsals.  Select participants will perform in two public performances of the opera. Roles may be double cast.”

That session starts on Feb. 11 and ends on the 24th. The other two sessions will feature more vocal instruction, though with no specific production of an opera to accompany it.

Scotto performed the opera throughout her career, famously recording it with Carlo Bergonzi and Giuseppe Taddei under the musical direction of Francesco Molinari-Pradelli. That recording is from a live performance in 1967. She also has a recording from Bergamo in which she stars alongside Giuseppe di Stefano and Ivo Vinco.
