Opera North Breaks Up With Music Director After Short Relationship

Opera North and its music director are reportedly ending their one-year relationship.

According to Slipped Disc, music director Alexander Markovic has resigned from the company.

Per the company, “Richard Mantle, General Director of Opera North, has announced that he has today accepted the resignation of Aleksandar Markovic as the Company’s Music Director. Mr. Markovic will formally leave Opera North at the end of his first year in July 2017.”

Markovic was named Music Director back in February 2016 and opened the season conducting “Der Rosenkavalier.” When he was appointed, his comments indicated that the relationship would be a fruitful one.

“I can honestly say that when I first worked with Opera North it felt like love at first sight, and ever since my admiration and affection for the company has continued to grow and grow… ‘Opera North is exactly where I want to be right now and I am very excited by the prospect of working with them much more closely. This a brilliant new chapter in my life and a bright challenge to which I commit myself fully.’

But it seems that it was ultimately not meant to be.
