Lucias Lucas’ U.S. Debut Among Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend in North America (5/3-5)

By David Salazar

This weekend has a ton of incredible productions to behold. The New York Opera Festival is in full swing as some of the major companies from around the country start to close their doors for the summer.

The Rape of Lucretia – New Camerata Opera

The Britten piece gets a unique new production directed by Bea Goodwin that will also feature Allison Gish in the title role. New Camerata Opera is a company full of unique and innovative concepts and this production, with an emphasis on ASL performance, will be one to watch.

Dialogue of the Carmelites – Metropolitan Opera

Poulenc’s glorious work comes to the Met in an iconic production, featuring tremendous star power throughout its cast. Isabel Leonard, Adrianne Pieczonka, Erin Morley, Karita Mattila, David Portillo, and Jean-François Lapointe headline the production with Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting.

Riders to the Sea & Empty the House – Opera Philadelphia

Opera Philadelphia will present a unique double bill about parents, their children, and memories. “Riders to the Sea” is a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which he wrote with John Millington Synge, while “Empty the House” is one created by composer Rene Orth and librettist Mark Campbell. There will be three performances throughout the weekend, including two on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Don Pasquale – Pittsburgh Opera

This opera really should have been in our Top 5 last week, but since it wasn’t, it makes it on this list with the highest of recommendations. Why? Two words – Lisette Oropesa. The 2019 Richard Tucker Award winner is starring in her only American opera production of the season for only two more performances. She is a dominant force of nature as far as Bel Canto goes and her rising star makes her a singer you simply can’t miss.

Don Giovanni – Tulsa Opera

Baritone Lucia Lucas makes her hotly anticipated U.S. debut in Mozart’s famed opera. This will be a historic and essential performance to attend for anyone in the area. Performances are set for May 3 and 5.
