Lisette Oropesa, Sabine Devielhe & Dorothea Röschmann Headline L’Orchestre de Paris’ 2019-20 Season

L’Orchestre de Paris has announced its 2019-20 season! For the purposes of this article, we will focus primarily on vocal performances.

The season will kick off with a concert led by Karina Canellakis, newly appointed Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Dorothea Röschmann will be featured vocally, performing alongside the orchestra and chorus. The program is set to include Wagner’s Prelude to “Lohengrin” and Wesendonck Lieder, Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloé” (Suite No. 2), and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra.

Performance Dates: Sept. 4 & 5, 2019

Susanna Mälkki, Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead a concert featuring cellist Edgar Moreau, along with the Jeune Choeur de Paris and Maîtrise de Paris, under the direction of choirmasters Henri Chalet and Patrick Marco, respectively. The program will include Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”

Performance Dates: Sept. 25 & 26, 2019

In a partnership with Arsenal de Metz, David Yoo will lead the Choeur de l’Orchestra de Paris and Orchestre National de Metz in a performance of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. Soprano Angélique Boudeville, alto Valentine Lemercier, tenor Kevin Amiel, and baritone Jerome Varnier will be featured as vocal soloists.

Performance Dates: Oct. 3 – 6, 2019

Lyric dramatic soprano Lise Davidsen is set to perform, with François-Xavier Roth, Music Director of Les Siècles, leading the orchestra. The program will include A. Webern’s “Passacaglia,” R. Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder, and Stravinski’s “Petrouchka.”

Performance Dates: Oct. 16 & 17, 2019

Sakari Oramo will lead the orchestra in a performance featuring Finnish soprano Anu Komsi. The program will include Copland’s “Fanfare for a Common Man,” Lindberg’s “Accused,” for soprano and orchestra, and Tchaikovski’s Symphony No. 4.

Performance Date: Nov. 20, 2019

Esa-Pekka Salonen will lead a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. Mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa will be featured vocally, along with the Choeur de Femmes et d’Enfants de l’Orchestre de Paris under the direction of choirmaster Lionel Sow.

Performance Dates: Dec. 12 – 14, 2019

Valery Gergiev, General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, will conduct the orchestra in a performance of Debussy’s “Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien” (Suite) and Stravinsky’s “L’Oiseau de feu.” Sopranos Julie Fuchs and Sandrine Piau will be featured as vocal soloists, performing alongside the orchestra and chorus.

Performance Dates: Dec. 19 & 20, 2019

Tugan Sokhiev will lead a performance of Berlioz’ “La Damnation de Faust.” The cast will include tenor Jean-François Borras as Faust, mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes as Marguerite, baritone Ludovic Tézier as Méphistophélès, and bass Renaud Delaigue as Brander. The Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestra de Paris will also be featured.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15 & 16, 2020

Gerald Wirth will lead the Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestra Paris in a concert featuring works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Rheinberger.

Performance Date: Jan. 22, 2020

Riccardo Chailly will conduct the orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “Ode to Joy.” Soprano Christina Landshamer, mezzo-soprano Gerhild Romberger, tenor Steve Davislim, and bass Dimitry Ivashchenko will be featured vocally, along with the chorus.

Performance Dates: Jan. 31 & Feb 1, 2020

Mathilde Vittu will lead the Amwaj Choir of Palestine (Bethlehem, Hebron), Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestra Paris, and singers of Paris and Aubervilliers in “Miroirs de L’Autre,” a concert featuring the works of Moneim Adwan, Naji Hakim, and Marcel Khalifé.

Performance Date: Mar. 1, 2020

Jukka-Pekka Saraste will conduct the orchestra in a performance of two works by Mahler, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Symphony No. 6 “Tragic.” Baritone Stéphane Degout will be featured as a vocal soloist.

Performance Dates: Mar. 4 & 5, 2020

Conductor Alain Altinoglu will lead a concert featuring pianist Alexandre Tharaud, mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch, and bass-baritone István Kovács. The program will begin with an arrangement by Altinoglu, Concert Suite from Debussy’s “Pelléas and Mélisande,” followed by Ravel’s Concerto pour la main gauche and Bartók’s “Bluebeard’s Castle.”

Performance Dates: Mar. 11 & 12, 2020

Lionel Sow will present Kurt Weill’s Das Berliner Requiem and Britten’s “Children’s Crusade,” featuring the Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestra Paris, Choeur de l’Orchestra Paris, and students of the Conservatoire de Paris.

Performance Dates: Mar. 28, 2020

Former Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris Daniel Harding will lead the orchestra in a performance of Mendelssohn’s oratorio “Elijah,” featuring soprano Lucy Crowe, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice, tenor Daniel Behle, and baritone Christian Gerhaher, along with the chorus.

Performance Dates: Apr. 1 & 2, 2020

Sopranos Sabine Devielhe and Gaelle Arquez, baritone Florian Boesch, the Choeur de Jeunes de l’Orchetre de Paris, and Choeur de l’Orchestre de Paris will be featured in a performance led by conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. The program will include a piece by Unsuk Chin, Debussy’s “La Demoiselle élue,” and Fauré’s Requiem.

Performance Dates: Apr. 29 & 30, 2020

Lionel Sow will present Benoit Menut’s chamber opera “Stella et le Maître des Souhaits,” featuring the Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestra Paris and Musiciens de l’Orchestre de Paris.

Performance Date: May 6, 2020

The Choeur de l’Orchestre de Paris will present “La Danse des Morts,” under the direction of Lionel Sow. The program will include Hugo Distler’s “Totentanz” and Frank Martin’s Mass.

Performance Date: May 17, 2020

Conductor Simone Young will lead a concert performance of Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio” (version by Walter Jens). The cast will feature soprano Elza van der Heever as Leonore, tenor Simon O’Neill as Florestan, soprano Katerina Tretyakova as Marzelline, bass Falk Struckmann as Rocco, baritone Gerald Finley as Don Pizzaro, bass Boaz Daniel as Don Fernando, and tenor Paul Schweinester as Jaquino.

Performance Dates: May 27 & 29, 2020

Conductor Daniele Rustioni will lead the orchestra in a concert featuring two works, Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to “Der Frieschültz” and Carl Orff’s cantana “Carmina Burana.” Soprano Lisette Oropesa, countertenor Max Emanuel Cenčić, and baritone Simon Keenlyside will perform, along with the Choeur d’Enfants de l’Orchestre Paris and Choeur de l’Orchestre de Paris.
