LA Opera Adds One Performance Of Candide

By Francisco Salazar

Due to popular demand, the LA Opera has scheduled an additional matinee performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.”

The added performance will take place on Saturday, February 17, at 2 p.m. and will star Kelsey Grammer as Voltaire/Pangloss, Christine Ebersole as the Old Lady, Erin Morley as Cunegonde, and Jack Swanson in the title role. LA Opera Music Director James Conlon conducts the production, which is being staged by Francesca Zambello.

The work is being presented in celebration of the composer’s centennial and while “Candide” has been called problematic, the LA Opera’s current production has received rave reviews, particular for Morley, who critics noted “steals the show with her coloratura runs” and  “hit every note perfectly while dancing wildly and even lying down at one point.”

“Candide” runs through Feb. 18, 2018.
