David Daniels & Scott Walters Detained At Washtenaw County Jail

By Francisco Salazar

Countertenor David Daniels and his husband Scott Walters have been detained at the Washtenaw County Jail since Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 on charges of raping baritone Samuel Schultz in 2010.

MLive originally reported that the two had been arrested and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. OperaWire has since received confirmation from Daniels’ representatives that the two are currently detained at the Washtenaw County Jail.

Per Daniels and Walters’ representatives, charging documents from the Harris County State Attorney’s office have not yet been issued. When they are, Daniels and Walters would be extradited to Texas, where the act allegedly occurred and where they would be prosecuted.

Matt Hennessy, the Houston lawyer representing the couple issued a public statement stating that “David and Scott are innocent of any wrongdoing. Sam Schultz is not a victim. He never would have gotten this much attention from his singing, and he knows and resents that fact. He waited eight years to complain about adult, consensual sex to ride the MeToo movement to unearned celebrity. We will fight this.”

When OperaWire reached out to Schultz for a response to Hennessy’s statement, the baritone wrote back, “I have no comment.”

Last summer Schultz went public about an alleged rape and as a result, Daniels was forced to take a leave of Absence from the University of Michigan where he was teaching. He was later accused by Andrew Lipian and another student.

In October 2018 Daniels and his representatives denied Lipian’s allegation stating, “These allegations are both false and malicious. I have never had a physical relationship with the individual mentioned in this complaint. The events alleged here never happened and I intend to defend my reputation. I am an openly gay man who has been married to a wonderful partner for the past four years. It pains me that someone, for reasons I cannot fathom, would attempt to destroy my career, the program at Michigan, and all that I hold dear.”

The famed countertenor also denied the rape allegations.

OperaWire will be following up on the story as more information is made available.
