The Salzburg Festival’s upcoming production of Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk” is getting some cast changes.

Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto has stepped out of the upcoming production in the role of Boris Ismailov, stating that the role is not for him. As a result, Dmitry Ulyanov will replace him.

The opera is also getting a new tenor as Russian tenor Maxim Aksenov has been replaced by the American tenor Brandon Jovanovich.

Ulyanov is best known for his work at the Bolshoi opera while Jovanovich has performed the role of Sergei to great acclaim around the world. Most recently he took on the role at the Metropolitan Opera in a well-reviewed run.

Andreas Kriegenburg directs the new production with Nina Stemme singing the title role.  Mariss Jansons conducts all five performances which are set to open on August 2.
